Title: Stratum basale in the epidermis
Description:
(A): Skin of snout, stain Mallory-resorchin, bovine. Stratum basale (basal layer) with heavily pigmented cells.
(B): Skin of snout, stain hematoxylin-eosin, bovine. A higher magnification reveals the supranuclear localization of the pigment granules.
(C-D): Back skin, electron microscopy, human. The pigmented dark brown cells in (A) represent the basal cells that have taken up
melanin granules from the melanocytes. The pigment is stored at the sunny side of the cell towards the light entrance (B),
identifiable in (C) as dark, packed granules above the nucleus. Note also the bundles of cytokeratin filaments and the desmosomes.
(Electron micrograph (C) by courtesy of A. Stadhouders, PhD, Head of the former Department of Electron Microscopy,
Radboud university medical center, Nijmegen, The Netherlands).
(D): Melanocyte adjacent to basal lamina (*). Note the fine 10 nm intermediate-sized vimentin filaments.
Keywords/Mesh: skin, epidermis, stratum basale, melanin, cytokeratin, vimentin, intermediate filament, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection
