Title: Cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN) (human, adult)
Description: Stain: Hematoxylin-eosin.
(A): Normal squamous epithelium.
(B): CIN 1 (mild dysplasia), lower 1/3 of epithelium high N/C ratio cells, some mitoses.
(C, D): CIN 3 (severe dysplasia – carcinoma in situ) high N/C ratio atypical cells with enlarged nuclei, pleomophism, loss of polarity, mitoses throughout epithelium, but intact basement membrane. Higher magnification (D) shows details of atypical cells and mitoses (→). (Partly by courtesy of G.P. Vooijs MD PhD, former Head of the Department of Pathology, Radboud university medical center, Nijmegen, The Netherlands).
