Title: Stratum spinosum with melanosome complexes in the epidermis
Description:
Back skin, electron microscopy, human.
(A): Stratum spinosum (spinous layer) with desmosomal bridges between the cells, and keratohyalin aggregates within the cells.
(B): Spinous cell with electron-dense granules of simple melanosomal complexes. Note the intercellular spaces.
(C): Composed melanosome complexes (melanin) intermingled with keratin filaments.
Three types of melanin are described: Eumelanin, the most abundant melanin in humans;
Pheomelanin (red hair, lips, nipples, glans of penis, vagina);
Neuromelanin, in some catecholaminergic neurons.
The enzyme tyrosinase converts tyrosine in DOPA and dopaquinon, which is further processed into melanin.
(D): Desmosomes between cells of the stratum spinosum.
(E): Small and large aggregated keratohyalin complexes in the cells of the strata spinosum and granulosum.
Keywords/Mesh: skin, epidermis, stratum spinosum, spinous layer, stratum granulosum, granular layer, melanin, melanosome complex, desmosome, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection
