Title: Electron micrograph of a venule and a vein in a penile corpus spongiosum (human)
Description:
(A): Small venule. (1): Lumen venule.
(2): Endothelial cells with small dark Weibel-Palade bodies (red arrows) near the cell surface. (4): Erythrocyte. (5): Neutrophilic granulocyte. (6): Smooth muscle cells.
(B): Vein (higher magnification). (1): Lumen. (2): Endothelial cell with small dense Weibel-Palade bodies (red arrows). (3): ECM with collagen fibres. (6): Smooth muscle cells.
Background:
The Weibel-Palade bodies are frequently found in the venous part of the vascularisation. These bodies contain P-selectin stored in vesicles, which is a cell adhesion molecule that becomes, upon activation, exposed at the cell surface resulting in attraction and adhesion of neutrophils. The deep artery of the penis divides into the helicine arteries that deliver the blood for the vascular spaces during erection. The latter form venous shunts to the peripheral venous system.
Keywords/Mesh: cardiovascular system, vascularisation, venule, vein, endothelium, Weibel-Palade body, smooth muscle, electron microscopy, POJA collection
