Description:
Survey and details of the follicular structure of the thyroid gland, at different enlargements, stain Azan. The thyroid gland is divided in lobuli by septa. The epithelial cells form follicular cyst-like structures for storage of their inactive thyroglobulin in colloid form (1) of different colors. The height of the epithelium increases upon increased hormone production.
The synthesis and breakdown of thyroglobulin is regulated by the hypothalamus (thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and pituitary (thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
A second cell type, the C-cell or parafollicular cell that produces calcitonin, is located in clusters just below the follicular range but
within the basement membrane.
