Title: Light- and electron micrographs of myotendinous junctions
Description:
(A): Longitudinal section, Azan stain, human. (1) The surrounding endomysial connective tissue of the muscle fibres continues in the (blue) tendon (2). (Note that the tendon is intentionally pulled apart to demonstrate the transition).
(B): Longitudinal section through the transition from muscle to tendon. (1): Myofibre. (2): Fascicle of collagen fibrils with flattened cell body of tenocyte and thin slender branches of neighboring tenocytes.
(C): (1): Irregular end part of myofibre. (2): Collagen fibrils within the ECM. Nuclei of several tenocytes are present.
(D): The serrated aspect is caused by finger-like protrusions from the myofibre (upper part) downwards into the ECM filled with collagen fibres and slender tips of the tendon fibroblasts (tenocytes or tendinocytes).
