1.1 POJA-L741
Title: Plasma cells with Russell bodies (nose septum, rat)
Description: Electron microscopy.
Accumulation of few plasma cells. These mature plasma cells exhibit in their cytoplasms dilated rough endoplasmic reticula (1) filled with electron-grey material (antibodies) as well as electron-dense granules (3) of varying sizes confirming their secretory activities.
(2): Indicates the juxtanuclearly located elaborate Golgi area with secretion vacuoles.
(3): These electron-dense granules (3) are made up of accumulated (crystallin) immunoglobulins, within the lumen of the rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae (so-called Russell bodies). Hyperstimulation might result in the formation of these Russell bodies, easily detectable in light microscopy.
(4): Collagen fibers in the nose septum.
Background: The presence of Russell bodies could be indicative for some degree of cell pathology (e.g. inflammation of nose, stomach) but they are also observed in normal adults.
Keywords/Mesh: blood, bone marrow, plasma cell, Russell body, immunoglobulin, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection
