Title: Inclusion body myositis (IBM): electron microscopy (human)
Description:
(A): Rimmed vacuoles (1) in muscle fibre with (2) myofilaments. (3): Nucleus with fibrillar inclusions.
(B, C): Details of rimmed vacuoles.
(D): Capillary. (3): Erythrocyte in capillary lumen. (4): Endothelial cell with festoon-like tubuloreticular inclusions (= 5) (zoom in) located between the small lysosomes.
Rimmed vacuoles are small areas of focal destruction of muscle fibres, found in inclusion body myositis, oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy and other muscle disorders. They are known to contain amyloid proteins, probably of beta-amyloid type. The rimmed vacuoles are probably of lysosomal origin. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1332175/)
