4.1.0 DIGESTIVE TRACT: INTRODUCTION
The digestive tract comprises images of the following parts:
1. Oesophagus, The oesophageal mucosa contains non-keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium that turns into simple epithelium in the transition area of oesophagus to stomach. The loosely lamina propria is followed by a muscularis mucosae of smooth muscle fibers. The submucosa contains mucous glands and the muscularis proper is arranged in circular and longitudinal layers which continue in the stomach area .

2. Stomach. The stomach is lined by simple epithelium where the gastric glands extrude the hydrochloric acid, proteolytic enzymes and mucins. All areas of the stomach (cardia, pyloric mucosa and fundus mucosa) and all gastric cell types are shown in the POJA collection.

3. Duodenum. In the duodenum end the pancreatic ducts and bile ducts. The duodenum has high plicae and broad villi as well as mucoid glands (of Brunner) in the submucosa and lamina propria.
See: POJA-L4000+La0164
4. Small intestine (jenumum and ileum). The jejunum has high plicae and long slender villi. In their crypts Paneth cells are present. The ileum has much less plicae and the villi are shorter and less numerous, with numerous Paneth cells and lymph follicles.

5. Large intestine (appendix, colon, rectum). The appendix contains numerous lymph follicles or nodules. The colorectal canal is devoided of villi and mainly shows crypts with goblet cells. The muscle bundles are arranged in thyree taeniae with plicae semilunares and haustrae. Towards the exit the simple epithelium turns into squamous epithelium and eventual into skin-like epithelium.
