Description:
(A): Longitudinal section of fetal cardiocytes, Haematoxylin-eosin, fetus human. A uniform pattern of slender fibres with little interstitium and no lipofuscin. Most single nuclei are well located centrally, a few bi-nucleated cells are also present. A fine striation is well defined.
(B): Longitudinal sectioned adult cardiocytes, Haematoxylin-eosin, adult human. Note anastomosing pattern of the cylindrical cells. At (1) the intercalated discs. At (2) the nuclear poles filled with lipofuscin.
(C): Cross-sectioned fetal cardiocytes, Haematoxylin-eosin, fetus rat. Note that numerous cells (= fibres) lack a central nucleus, fine cytoplasmic (= sarcoplasmic) dots indicate cross-sectioned myofibrils (blue arrows). (1) Blood capillaries between the close-packed cardiocytes.
(D): Cross-sectioned adult cardiocytes, Haematoxylin-eosin, adult human. Note characteristic irregular outline of the adult cardiocytes and the presence of lipofuscin (1) centrally.
