Title: Saphenous vein (human)
Description:
(A): Longitudinal section of great saphenous vein, orcein-haematoxylin-azophloxine). (1) intima with cross-sectioned longitudinal smooth muscle cells (SMC), (2) media with circular SMCs, (3) adventitia with cross-sectioned longitudinal SMCs. Note the dense-stained purple elastic fibers between the SMCs.
(B): Cross-section of great saphenous vein, orcein-haematoxylin. (1) intima with cross-sectioned SMCs, (2) media with circular SMCs, (3) adventitia with cross-sectioned SMCs. Note the dense-stained purple elastic fibres between the SMCs.
Background: There are more bundles of smooth muscle present in many large veins situated in the lower half of the body. By muscular contraction these veins actively push the blood upwards to the heart against the haemostatic pressure. Surface located veins develop a stronger muscular wall compared to the deep veins. The saphenous vein is located almost on the surface of the limb muscles and is resistant as well as flexible against physical influences.
Keywords/Mesh: cardiovascular system, vascularisation, saphenous vein, histology, POJA collection
