11.2.1 POJA-L3178+3183+3197+3198+3202
Title: Spinal ganglion and amphicyte
Description:
(A): Stain cresyl violet, dog.
(B): Stain Azan, human. The ganglion cell has a conspicuous nucleolus. The perikaryon extents to a lightly stained axon hillock (1) and is surrounded by cuboidal amphicytes (2). Nerve fibers (3) at varying degree of myelination are found in the vicinity of the ganglion cell.
(C, D): Electron micrograph of a spinal ganglion cell, rat equivalent to (B). Numerous small axons are wrapped in densely stained myelin.
(D) Shows details of the area around the axon hillock (1) with numerous unmyelinated axons.
(E): Electron micrograph of spinal ganglion with part of a satellite cell, rat. Note the hemidesmosomal-like connections (small arrows) of this glial cell on the basal lamina. The function of glial cells is embedding and insulating the nerve cell types, phagocytosis of neuronal debris, being involved in adapting synaptic stimulation between nerve cells and nutrients transport to nerve cells.
Keywords/Mesh: nervous tissue, spinal ganglion cell, amphicyte, satellite cell, myelinated nerve fiber, glial cell, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection
