12.1.6 POJA-L4398+2542+2543
Title: Eyelids and conjunctival sac
Description:
(A): Upper eyelid and lower eyelid covering the cornea and lens, stain hematoxylin-eosin (black and white print), fetus human. (4a) Upper eye lid. (4b) Lower eye lid. (3) Cornea. (1) Lens.
(B, C): Immunoperoxidase staining with AEC and monoclonal antibody COTL1, fetus human. (B, 4a) Upper lid. (B, 3) Cornea. (B, 1) Lens.
(B and C, 2) Fornix of conjunctival sac. Heavy pigmentation indicates part of the iris.
Early stage two-layered epithelium with periderm (in B) and advanced stage- multilayered epithelium (in C) lining the future conjunctival sac or fornix. Reddish-brown reaction product indicates the presence of mucin-secretory cells positive for the monoclonal antibody COTL1 that recognized colon-associated glycoprotein.
Background: The posterior surfaces of the lids are covered by a mucous membrane (non-keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium in the adult) the future palpebral conjunctiva. The transitional zones (future multilayered cylindrical epithelium with mucous secretory cells) into the bulbar conjunctiva form “cul-de-sacs” or fornices.
Keywords/Mesh: eye, eyelid, conjunctiva, fornix, histology, POJA collection
