Title: Ganglion cells in the medulla of the adrenal gland
Description:
(A - C): Adrenal gland, stain Azan, human. Survey of the adrenal gland with cortex and medulla in (A). Note the large muscular medullary vein close to blue rectangle with medullary cells. The medullary region in (B) with catecholamine producing cells (4), ganglion cells (5), zona reticularis (6). Details of the ganglion cells in (C). Vacuole in ganglion cell, see also (E, 7).
(D - F): Medulla, electron microscopy, rat. Survey medulla in (D). It shows a vast capillary network between the adrenalin and noradrenalin-storing cells and the ganglion cells. The adrenal medulla is derived from the neural crest and so the hormone synthesis is controlled by sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve branches.
Enlarged a ganglion cell in (E) with vacuole (7) and intracytoplasmic cyst (8). Note the vast RER profile of the ganglion cell. (9) Fibroblast.
In (F) satellite cell (1) accompanying the ganglion cells (2) adjacent to a noradrenalin-storing cell (3). Note the accumulation of synaptic vesicles and also some dense-core granules in a preganglionic sympathetic axon, embedded by the satellite cell (1). The satellite cell contains some electron-dense lysosomes.
Keywords/Mesh: adrenal gland, cortex, medulla, ganglion cells, adrenalin, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection
