Title: Penile urethra
Description:
(A, B, C, D) Closed urethra, stain Azan, human.
(1): Urethra covered with multiple pseudostratified epithelium. The epithelium of the urethra starts off as transitional cells
after exit of the bladder. Further along the urethra there are pseudostratified columnar and stratified columnar epithelia,
then stratified squamous cells near the external urethral orifice.
Towards the glans penis partly transitions into squamous epithelium occur.
There are small short mucus/glycosaminoglycan-secreting urethral glands, detailed in (B, C) as endoepithelial glands
that help protect the epithelium from the corrosive urine (glands of Littré).
(2): Proper lamina.
(3): Corpus spongiosum.
(4): Tunica albuginea.
(5): Endoepithelial mucous cells.
Keywords/Mesh: penis, cavernous body, corpus spongiosum, urethra, urethral gland (Littré), histology, POJA collection
