7.2 POJA-L1892 Title: Labium majus (human, adult) Description: Stain: Azan. Epidermis (keratinising squamous stratified epithelium (1) of labium majus with dense dermis formed by papillary layer with dermal papillae (2) and reticular layer with compact smooth muscle bundles (3) and blood vessels of cutaneous plexus (4). Hair follicles, longitudinal/cross-sections (5) surrounded by sebaceous glands (6). These epitheloid white cells (6) are holocrine simple saccular glands producing sebum that drain via short ducts (→) into the dermal pilary canal of hair follicles (5). Remnants of hair shafts (7) at the surface of epidermis. Background: Labioscrotal folds in the embryo develop into scrotum or labium majus. Homologue to the scrotum’s dartos muscle (non-striated muscles) the labium majus also contains bundles of smooth muscle in the reticular layer. Eccrine including apocrine sweat glands as well as subcutaneous adipose tissue are also present but not depicted in this picture.
