Title: Outer medulla (VI) in the rat kidney
Description:
(A): Stain hematoxylin-eosin. Medullar area in the kidney with cross-sections through (1) collecting tubules, and hardly to distinguish
the (2) thin limbs (Henle’s loop) and (3) capillaries.
(B, C): Immunoperoxidase staining with DAB and antibodies against parvalbumin (inner stripe-outer zone).
Medullary thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (mTAL) is positive; descending thin limb (DTL) is negative;
medullary collecting duct (OMCD) is slightly positive.
In (C) the outer medulla with a positive medullary thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (mTAL); descending thin limb (DTL) is
negative; proximal straight tubule (PST) is negative; medullary collecting duct (OMCD) is slightly positive.
Parvalbumin, a calcium-binding protein, localizes in the thick ascending loop of Henle, the distal convoluted tubule, the connecting
tubule and the intercalated cells of the collecting duct. It is present in a thin cytosolic layer along the basolateral membrane and it is thought to be involved in the regulation of transport processes located in these membranes
(D): Electron microscopy, perfused-fixed kidney in outer stripe of outer medulla showing cross sections through (4) collecting duct (OMCD), (5) proximal straight tubule (PST), (6) medullar thick ascending limb (mTAL), (7) descending thin limb (DTL), (8) capillaries.
Keywords/Mesh: urinary system, kidney, medulla, mTAL, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection
