4.4.1 POJA-L2953+2867+2868+3557
Title: δ-cells in islet of Langerhans in pancreas (rat).
Description: (A) electron micrograph scheme of a δ-cell. (B) Electron micrograph survey of delta cells; (C) detail δ-granules; (D) δ-granules beside α-granules.
The δ-cells produce somatostatin and comprise about 5% of all islet cells in the endocrine part of the pancreas. These granules (1) are not as electron-dense as the granules from α- (2) and β-cells, and miss as well the electron-light halo. Compare the two types of granules in (1, 2 in D).
Somatostatin inhibits the secretion of insulin and glucagon. Reversely, glucagon stimulates the release of somatostatin, while insulin inhibits somatostatin release.
Keywords/Mesh: Pancreas, endocrine, δ-cells, somatostatin, electron microscopy, histology, POJA collection.
