Title: Eyelid III
Description:
(A, B, C): Different areas of the eyelid (palpebra), stain Azan, human. The palpebra is in fact a skin fold of which the inner side (i) covers the cornea, and the outer side (o) is identical to skin.
Note that the palpebral conjunctival epithelium (i) already consists of multilayered (4-5) cylindrical epithelial cells including goblet cells. The lid consists of tough connective tissue plates (2) which can be moved upwards and downwards by the palpebral part of the orbicularis oculi muscle (1).
In addition the eye lid contains modified sebaceous glands such as the tarsal holocrine, alveolar glands of Meibom (3), as well as the accessory smaller lacrimal glands (Krause) in the upper lid (4).
Hair follicle (5) in the outer side of the eyelid.
