Title: Functional structure of the sarcomere in striated muscle fibre
Description:
The skeletal muscle fibre or skeletal muscle cell is surrounded by the cell membrane, called sarcolemma (1). All muscle cells contact each other via that cell membrane. Within one cell a contraction unit (2) exists being composed of thick (myosin) and thin (actin) filaments that slide in each other causing contraction. That contraction unit is anchored (3 Red) to the sarcolemma by several proteins and to the tendon fibres/connective tissue fibres (3 Blue) to facilitate the propagation of a contraction to neighbouring cells and to tendon and bone. The contraction mechanism (actomyosin complex) is stabilized within the cell by many proteins that act as intermyofibrillar cytoskeleton (4 pink-reddish coiled lines).
Keywords/Mesh: locomotor system, skeletal muscle, striated muscle, sarcomere, cytoskeleton, scheme, electron microscopy, POJA collection
