7.1 POJA-L-1234C
Title: Ovarian follicles in ovary (rabbit)
Description: Stain: Azan.
A low magnification of a part of the ovary near the ovarian ligament (1, with smooth muscle cells). Near the capsule the accumulation of primordial/primary follicles (2). (3) are several secondary (antral, vesicular) follicles in various stages of development. Note that the antrum folliculi filled with the clear proteinaceous liquor is not always observed due to the section plane. A thick rim of layers with granulosa (or follicular) cells (↑) lines the antrum while only at one pole a heap of granulosa cells covers the oocyte the so-called cumulus oophorus (or cumulus ovaricus) . A sharp blue-stained zona pellucida (4). The inner and outer theca cell layers (5) surround the granulosa cells of every antral follicle (5). At this magnification the external theca (or theca externa) is not visible and is merged with the blue-stained ovarian stroma. (6) points to the medullar area with blood vessels.
Keywords/Mesh: female reproductive organs, ovary , ovarian follicle, zona pellucida, theca cells, granulosa cells, primordial follicle, antral follicles, histology, POJA collection
