The androgen-dependent seminal vesicle or glandula vesiculosa consists of a coiled tubule surrounded by connective tissue (stroma).
The mucosa is folded in plicae-like structures or invaginations covered by a simple columnar to pseudostratified epithelium (1),
with secretory activity. The lamina propria (2) is modest but contains elastic fibers. The tunica muscularis is well developed and
consists of helically convoluted smooth muscle layers (3). The muscular wall is surrounded by a capsule (5) (capsula fibrosa).
Background: During ejaculation the secretion of the seminal vesicle is added to the sperm cells due to the contraction of the muscle
fibers. The viscous secretion contains among others high levels of fructose, prostaglandins and seminal vesicle-specific proteins.
The size of the columnar cells varies and is affected by the testosterone level.
