Title: Plicae and villi in the jejunum (human).
Description: The jejunum shows six circular plicae (1) or folds of Kerckring, being formed by mucosa and submucosa (2). Each plica is studded with villi (7) and crypts (8). The whole tube is surrounded by a double layer of muscle cells, i.e. an inner circular layer (4) and an outer longitudinal layer (5), and adjacent to the serosa layer (6). The lining of the jejunum is suited for the absorption of digested food.
