Title: Hyaline costal cartilage Description: (A-C): Hyaline cartilage, human. (A): Scheme of costal cartilage. (1): Group of isogenous chondrocytes embedded and separated from each other by interterritorial matrix. (2): Proliferating chondrocytes arranged in rows. (3): Islet of one group of isogenous chondrocytes surrounded by territorial matrix. (4): Asbestos collagen fibres demasked in the interterritorial area due to regressive changes during senescence. Also known as so-called amianthoid or asbestos transformation. (B): Basic fuchsin staining of costal cartilage. The light stained area around the denser stained isogenous chondrocytes is the territorial matrix. (C): Basic fuchsin stained, detail of isogenous chondrocytes surrounded by the dense capsular matrix followed by the lighter territorial and reddish stained interterritorial matrix. The capsular matrix, also called pericellular matrix, contains collagen type V, VI and IX and a high concentration of sulphated proteoglycans and glycoproteins such as fibronectin, laminin. The territorial matrix shows a network of collagen type II and is less intense stained due to lower amounts of sulphated proteoglycans. See also:
