Title: The human thyroid gland (I)
Description:
(A - C): Scheme. (A): Normal thyroid gland. (B): Hyperfunctioning thyroid gland. (C): Hypofunctioning thyroid gland.
(1) Colloid in (A, B, C). Note the differences in degree of filling of the follicles. Depending on the activity the follicle epithelium (2) is cuboidal or flattened. The thyroid gland stores large amounts of its hormone-containing secretory product in the follicular space,
giving the gland the appearance of an exocrine gland. The stored thyroid hormones (T4 and T3) are bound to a glycoprotein which
complex is inactive. The height of the follicle epithelium increases upon increased hormone production.
Parafollicular cells (3) or C-cells in (A, green) produce calcitonin. These cells (calcitonin-producing cells) are not involved in the changes
of follicular epithelium.
(D): Resting follicles with low cuboidal epithelium, stain Azan.
(E, F): Stain trichrome-Weigert. Hyperfunction in (E): Increase in height of follicular epithelial cells. Number of colloid vacuoles increases.
Hypofunction in (F): Lower height or flattened follicular epithelial cells.
Keywords/Mesh: thyroid gland, thyroglobulin, parafollicular cell, histology, POJA collection
