Title: Calcitonin-cells (C-cells) in thyroid gland (VIII)
Description:
Thyroid gland. (A): Stain hematoxylin-eosin, human. The follicular space (1) is partly filled with thyroglobulin produced by the surrounding epithelial cells (2). The calcitonin-cells or parafollicular cells (3) are located just below the epithelial cells and they are looking somehow paler.
(B): Electron microscopy, gerbil. Shows the ultrastructure of the follicular epithelial cells with a well-developed RER and Golgi apparatus as well as secretory granules with variable electron density and size.
(C): Electron microscopy, golden hamster. In (C) the ultrastructure of the calcitonin cells are shown, displaying numerous small electron-dense granules and ample presence of mitochondria.
