Title: Early and late foetal hyaline cartilage Description: Foetal human hyaline cartilage. Early (A) (haematoxylin-eosin stained) and late (B) foetal cartilage (human), (PAS stained). In the early foetal period (A) the cartilage displays numerous spindle-shaped cells that are evenly distributed throughout the cartilage. Crossed-sectioned cells are demonstrated as round-shaped cells. Isogenous cell groups are not yet formed. (B): Hyaline cartilage in late foetus. With gradually ageing of the foetus the characteristic formation of the isogenous cell groups (2) starts deeper in the cartilage. These chondrocytes are derived from perichondrial chondrocytes at the periphery of the cartilage (1). Isogenous groups of chondrocytes are clustered chondrocytes which remain together and represent recently divided cells.
