10.2 POJA-L2124
Title: Electron microscopy scheme of the human epidermis
Description:
(1) The upper layer stratum corneum (cornified layer) consists of keratinized flattened cells.
(2) Stratum granulosum (granular layer) with keratohyaline granules.
Note: the lucidum layer (translucent layer) is only present in thick skin type e.g. palms and soles).
(3) Stratum spinosum (spinous layer, prickle cell layer)) with numerous desmosomal junctions forming stellate bridges between
the cells (stellate appearance) in which thick bundles of keratin filaments end.
Note that the stratum basale/germinativum (basal/germinal layer) are not shown here.
Keywords/Mesh: skin, epidermis, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum corneum, histology, electron microscopy,
