16.1.3 POJA-L7049+7050+7054 Development of flat bones 2
Title: Development of flat bones 2
Description:
(A): Scheme.
(B): Trichrome Goldner stain, foetal cranium.
(C): Azan stain, facial bone. Human foetus. Intramembranous formation of bone (desmal ossification).
(0): Osteoid. (1): Osteoblast. (2): Osteoclast, with numerous microvilli at the surface towards the osteoid. (3): Primitive periosteum, condensed from the surrounding spindle-like mesenchym cells.
Background:
Mesenchymal stem cells-derived osteoprogenitor cells (osteoblast precursor cells) differentiate into osteoblasts. The osteoblasts produce the ECM by secreting type I collagen and bone matrix proteins (BMP’s). A hyaline material is deposited as osteoid. It is composed of collagenous fibres masked by a hyaline ground substance. At sites where removal of bone occurs large, multinucleated osteoclasts are present. These cells are found in shallow grooves or resorption bays (Howship’s lacuna ) in the bone tissue (see A).
