Title: Human parathyroid gland with chief cells and oxyphil cells (III)
Description:
(A - C): Increasing enlargements of gland, stain hematoxylin-eosin. Parenchym consists of irregular cell strands, anastomosing cords and small cell groups. (1) Fat cells. (2) Chief cells which are slightly smaller and paler than the oxyphilic cells (3). The secretion granules of the chief cells contain the parathyroid hormone (PTH), involved in calcium metabolism. The oxyphil cells are larger and eosinophilic due to the high content of mitochondria. They are probably not involved in hormone production. Their number increases with age.
Keywords/Mesh: parathyroid gland, chief cell, oxyphil cell, parathormone, PTH, histology, POJA collection
