Title: Epithelial lining of bronchiole in the lung Description: Scheme electron microscopy, human. In other mammalia e.g. gerbil, mouse, golden hamster etc. two major cell types line a bronchiolus, a more cuboidal shaped ciliated one (1) that also exhibits microvilli with many organelles (including electron-dense lysosomal structures). The non-ciliated cells (2, Clara cells) appeared taller and dome-shaped and protrude into the lumen. These cells are well provided with organelles, the apical portion shows Golgi areas and numerous electron-dense secretory granules containing a mixture of cholesterol and glycosaminoglycans. When released onto the surface they probably provide a protective layer. On the basal lamina (3) a small neuroendocrine cell (4) (belonging to the Amine Precursor Uptake and Decarboxylation cell system so-called APUD cells). The dense-core granules contain among others dopamine or serotonin. |

Title: Epithelial lining of respiratory bronchiole in the lung Description: Electron microscopy, gerbil. Two major cell types line a bronchiolus: a cuboidal-shaped ciliated one that exhibit microvilli with many organelles (1); the non-ciliated cells (2, Clara cells) are taller and are well provided with numerous electron-grey and smaller electron-dense secretory granules containing a mixture of cholesterol and glycosaminoglycans. When released onto the surface they probably provide a protective layer. (3) shows a small pulmonary artery with erythrocytes. At (*) sarcoplasm of smooth muscle cells. |

Title: Clara cell in lung Description: Electron microscopy, gerbil. In this species a non-ciliated Clara cell (1 = nucleus) contains numerous electron-grey secretion granules (2) of varying sizes, smaller more dense granules tend to localize in the apex of the cell. Between the granules agranular endoplasmic reticulum. Irregular blunt microvilli (↓). Note dilated basolateral invaginations (3); close to the thin basal lamina two nuclei of myofibroblasts (4) and lumen of capillary (C).
