Title: Survey of lung parenchym Description: Scanning electron microscopy, gerbil. The photograph shows (1) bifurcation of several smaller bronchi (presence of cartilage at this level is species- dependent) in the lung parenchym with alveoli (2). The long arrows indicate the route of alveolar ducts (4, ↕ length, and cross 4↑). Pulmonary vessels (3) Keywords/Mesh: respiratory tract, lung, pulmonary vessel, pulmonary artery, bronchus, bronchial epithelium, pseudostratified epithelium, smooth muscle seromucous gland, hyaline cartilage, alveolus, cytokeratin, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection |

Title: Survey of bronchus and lung parenchym Description: Stain Azan, adult human. (1) Lumen of small bronchus beside a lumen of pulmonary artery (2). Thin plates of hyaline cartilage (3) and connective tissue surrounding (1) and (2). Arrows (→) indicate lung alveoli with black-stained patches of carbon deposits. (4) Lung parenchym with alveoli. |

Title: Small bronchus in the lung Description: Stain Azan, adult human. Pseudostratified epithelium (1) with in between light-stained goblet cells and a blue-stained basement membrane (↓) with the proper lamina. The thin smooth muscle layer (2) is purple-stained and accompagnies the mucosal layer. At (3) a small hyaline cartilage and seromucous bronchial glands (4) with an excretory duct (6). A small site of carbon deposit (5) close to collapsed alveoli (#). |

Title: Keratin staining of bronchus epithelium Description: Anti-keratin-5-7-14-19 (OVTL 12/5 monoclonal antibody with immunoperoxidase staining on frozen sections), adult human. Hematoxylin counterstain. The pseudostratified epithelium (1) is stained keratin-positively (reddish- brown product) as well as the epithelial derivates such as the bronchial glands (2) and their excretory ducts (3). Other structures react negatively (blue stain) such as blood vessels (4), slender bundles of smooth muscles (5, subepithelially), cellular infiltrations of non-epithelial origin. This particular antibody against a certain epitope of the keratin filament protein family is applicable in the diagnosis of epithelial-derived tumours (e.g. carcinoma) versus non-epithelial-derived tumours (e.g. sarcoma). |
