Title: Urinary bladder 2
Description:
(A): Vesica urinaria, scheme, human. (A1) Urinary bladder. (A2) Distented ureter with umbrella-like surface epithelial cells.
(A3) Relaxed ureter with cylindrical surface epithelial cells.
(1) Transitional epithelium. (3) Tunica muscularis with longitudinal and circular, spiral muscle bundles (detrusor muscle).
(2) Lamina propria, tunica mucosa. (4) Tunica adventitia.
(B, C): Filled bladder (storage phase), stain Azan, human. (C) is equivalent to (A2).
(D): Corresponds with (A3). Empty bladder (micturition phase), stain hematoxylin-eosin, human.
The structure of the ureter is continuous with that of the urinary bladder (vesica urinaria).
The lamina propria is a thick layer of connective tissue mixed with elastic fibers.
The tunica muscularis in fact consists of a complex network of inner and outer longitudinal muscle fiber bundles, alternating with
circular muscle bundles (detrusor muscle), all needed to empty the urinary bladder efficiently.
Distension of the bladder stimulates the parasympathetic nerve fibers to contract the detrusor muscle of the bladder.
Glands are absent except for some smaller ones at the exit of the bladder.
Keywords/Mesh: urinary system, urinary bladder, vesica urinaria, ureter, urothelium, transitional epithelium, histology, POJA collection
