Title: Scheme survey frontal section of larynx Description: Scheme larynx, human. A pseudostratified epithelium covers the mucosa of the laryngeal cavity and vestibulum. At the vocal fold edge (3) the epithelium appears to be nonkeratinizing squamous. The connective tissue is rigidly attached to this edge and merges into the vocal ligament (dense elastic) and vocal muscle. (3) transition of pseudostratified epithelium into squamous epithelium (5) seromucous glands (6) ventriculus laryngis (7) plica ventricularis, with mixed laryngeal glands (8) ligamentum vocale as part of the plica vocalis, covered with squamous epithelium (9) vocal muscle (10) thyreoarytenoid muscle (pars lateralis) (11) ventricular recess (sacculus laryngis) (12) pseudostratified epithelium Keywords/Mesh: respiratory tract, larynx, supraglottis, glottis, subglottis, ventricular fold, laryngeal gland, sero-mucous gland, vocal cord, vocal ligament, vocal muscle, squamous epithelium, stratified epithelium, pseudostratified epithelium, histology, POJA collection |

Title: Ventricular fold (plica ventricularis) Description: Stain Azan, human. On top pseudostratified epithelium (1). Lamina submucosa with predominantly mucous glands (3), fat cells (4) and blood vessels. The lamina propria also contains lymphoid follicles (2) with a germinal center (immune protection). 8.3 POJA-L338
Title: Ventricular fold (plica ventricularis) Description: Stain Azan, human. On top pseudostratified columnar, ciliated epithelium (1). Centrally below an excretory duct (2) of laryngeal seromucous gland (3) with some adipocytes (*). Blood vessels and two lymph vessels (4) are present. 8.3 POJA-L340
Title: Vocal cord (plica vocalis), glottis Description: Stain Azan, human. The true vocal cord consist of the vocal ligament (L) covered by stratified squamous epithelium and the striated vocal muscle (medial part of the thyreoarythenoid muscle, not depicted in this picture). At the tip of the vocal cord the stratified epithelium is distinct and the lamina propria contains elastic fibers (*, light-reddish stained) reinforced with collagen to form the vocal ligament (L).
8.3 POJA-L341 Title: Transition surface of vocal cord into laryngeal surface (subglottis) Description: Stain Azan, human. Transition (↓) from stratified squamous epithelium (1) into pseudostratified epithelium (2) in the subglottis region. Blood vessels and the cellularity of the proper lamina is evident. |
