14.1 POJA-L6074+6109 Muscle spindles
Title: Muscle spindles
Description:
(A): Postnatal rat striated muscle immunostained with poly-anti desmin antibodies. Desmin is a striated muscle-specific intermediate filamentous protein, and antibodies against this protein are used as markers for detection of skeletal muscle precursors or derivates.
Striated muscle as well as the intrafusal fibres in the four muscle spindles (*) are stained positively brown with desmin antibodies. Intrafusal muscle fibres are specialised desmin-containing myofibres, that appear prenatally and also contract.
(B): Human, juvenile striated muscles in 1 micron plastic sections, stained with toluidine blue. Several muscle spindles are present. They show a capsule of connective tissue. Within the capsule several intrafusal muscle fibres are present which are sensitive for contraction and relaxation of the surrounded muscle fibres. They are innervated by both afferent and efferent nerve fibres.
