Description: Stain: Trichrome (Goldner), antikeratin antibody immunoperoxidase staining with diaminobenzidin reaction (DAB).
(A): Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium (NKSSE) with basal cells (1), parabasal cells (2); More superficial cell layers are composed of transparent cells (due to the presence of glycogen). (3) Proper lamina.
(B): With the exception of the unstained central nuclei the NKSSE shows a general cytokeratin expression (the antibody OVTL 12-5 stains CK 5, 7, 14, 19), positive epithelial ridges (4), but connective papilla (proper lamina, 3) is always negative.
