12.2.4.1 POJA-L3397+3428
Title: Keratan sulfate and collagen IV in the cochlea of the inner ear
Description:
(A): Cochlea, immunoperoxidase staining with AEC and antibodies against collagen IV, 4 days postnatal rat.
(1) Scala vestibuli. (2) Ductus cochlearis. (3) Scala tympani. (4) Ganglion spirale and cochlear nerve.
The survey shows distinctly all basal lamina-associated structures of the organ of Corti and its surroundings.
(B): Cochlea, immunoperoxidase staining with AEC and antibodies against keratan sulfate, 1 day postnatal rat.
The reactivity is localised in the basilar and tectorial membranes, but also in the basal cell layer of the stria vascularis.
The proteoglycan keratan sulfate is one of the main components of the tectorial membrane produced by the interdental cells
in the spiral limbus (in A, arrow) of the organ of Corti. This proteoglycan contributes to the stiffness of the tectorial membrane.
Hearing loss occurs in some disorders involving keratan sulfate metabolism or in MPS IV (mucopolysaccharidosis type IV)
as an autosomal recessief disease.
Keywords/Mesh: inner ear, cochlea, tectorial membrane, collagen IV, keratan sulfate, proteoglycan, histology. POJA collection
