Title: Cells of the zona fasciculata (II) in the adrenal gland
Description:
Zona fasciculata, electron microscopy. (A, B): Gerbil. (C, D): Rat. The hormone producing cells (1) in this zone show white vesicles (2) originally containing fat droplets for the production and storage of the glucocorticoids. The so called “spongiocytes” are closely associated with the capillaries (erythrocyte, B, 3) of which the endothelial cell is visible (B, 4).
In (C, D) the spongiocytes are not depleted and the hormone containing lipid droplets are visible as dark stained vesicles with a darker rim. Note the conspicuous type of tubular mitochondria in (B - D). Fenestrated capillaries (3) with an endothelial cell (4) are adjacent to the spongiocytes. (D, 5) is a fixed resident macrophage in the pericapillary space with large lysomes and lipofuscin granules.
