Description: Stain: (A) Azan (rabbit). (B) Electron microscopy (gerbil). (C) Keratin 18 antikeratin antibody (CK 18-2) immunoperoxidase staining with diaminobenzidin reaction (DAB) and hematoxylin counterstaining (human).
(A): Cuboidal surface epithelial lining (specialized peritoneal mesothelial cells, 1). Subepithelially blue-stained dense connective tissue (2) of tunica albuginea.
(B): Irregular nuclei of lining mesothelial cells (1). Cross-sections of microvilli (*) on cell apices junctioned to each other, light intracytoplasmic vacuoles are common. Plump fibroblast nuclei (1a) and collagen fibrils at (2).
(C): Cytokeratin staining (dark brown) shows positive cuboidal mesothelial cells (1), cluster of intermediary primordial follicles (3) with a single layer of mixed elongated and cuboidal follicular (granulosa) cells. Follicular (granulosa) cells only react for CK18; oocytes (4) and stroma are negative.
