Title: Smooth muscle actin and serotonin in colon mucosa (human)
Description: Stain: (A) Anti-smooth muscle-actin (Sma) antibodies-alkaline phosphatase labeled and (B) anti-serotonin-antibody immunoperoxidase staining with DAB and hematoxylin counterstaining (Kindly provided by late Dr. A. Verhofstad).
The red stained Sma in (A) shows how smooth muscle fibers originate from the lamina muscularis mucosae and extend from here between the colon crypts upwards and thus can regulate the movement of the colon surface and mucosa.
The crypts contain goblet cells (2) and Paneth cells (3) at the base of the crypts. Spread through the cryptic epithelium several serotonin producing cells in (B). The secretory granules of the Paneth cells contain a cocktail of bactericidal peptides such as lysozyme and are involved in intestinal host defense and homeostasis of colonizing microbiota.
