Title: Enamel 1 in longitudinal section of tooth Description: Thin ground section, human adult. Enamel is compact and acellular, and consists of vertical stacks of rods (prisms) as well as interrod (interprismatic) regions with less calcifying substance parallel to each other. Each prism is surrounded by an enamel sheath (a non-mineralized organic substance). From left to right: - Surface of enamel. - The parallel arrangement of stacks is evident: one light track represents one stack of rods (prisms); the dark parallel lines stand for the interrod substance. 3.6 POJA-L114A Title: Enamel 2 in longitudinal section of tooth Description: Thin ground section, human adult. Title: Enamel 6 in longitudinal section of tooth Description: Thin ground section, polarizing microscopy (optical axes of the polarizing plates are crossed at 60°), human adult. Left side enamel and at right side dark-stained striation of dentin. Wavy course of enamel prisms from dentinoenamel junction (right side, scalloped appearance) to the left. The transparent areas represent enamel lanes at a different polarizing angle. 3.6 POJA-L138 Title: Enamel 4 in longitudinal section of tooth Description: Thin ground section, polarizing microscopy (optical axes of the polarizing plates are crossed at 60°), human adult. Using polarizing microscopy the birefringence of the crystalline structure of enamel is colourful demonstrated. It is also a different approach to detect striae and bands or lines. Left: incremental lines (striae) of Retzius are well shown as straight oblique zones. Note the parallel lines of enamel stacks at the left corner of the picture. At the right side: parallel dark bands of Hunter-Schreger, the dentinoenamel junction and lightly coloured dentin with tubules.
