Title: Survey of tertiary follicles in ovary (human)
Description: Stain: (A, B) Hematoxylin-eosin.
(A). Survey of an ovary. Two large antral follicles (tertiary follicles type 5+) (1). Medulla with large blood vessels (2).
(B): In another sample a survey of two closely apposed large antral follicles. The large one (follicle type 5+) contains a cumulus oophorus (cumulus ovaricus) without a sectioned oocyte (3). A small rim of mural granulosa cells and follicular theca are present (4). Ovarian stroma is densely stained.
Background: Tertiary follicles are antral follicles with multiple layers of mural granulosa cells. Type 5 follicle has more than five layers of granulosa cell layers and a large antrum. Type 5+ follicle becomes a mature or preovulatory (Graafian) follicle with a size up to 20 mm.
Keywords/Mesh: female genitalia, ovary, ovarian follicle, Graafian follicle, tertiary follicle, cumulus oophorus, granulosa cells, histology, POJA collection
