(A): Closed urethra.
(1): Pars spongiosa urethrae, is star-like folded.
(2): Proper lamina.
(3): Corpus spongiosum constructed as a labyrinth of trabeculae creating cavernous spaces for the blood flow and store during erection.
(4): Tunica albuginea, as a dense connective tissue capsule.
(B): Shows an open urethra, i.e. with a wide lumen. This “duct” is covered with multilayered squamous epithelium (C, D), keratinized depending on the position near to the preputium skin. Urethral glands (Littré) are present as short endoepithelial invaginations (5)
or as a cross-sectioned long gland (6) of pure mucous cells (in C and D).
