It protects the cornea against the hypertonic water of the eye chamber. It is permeable to air oxygen used for oxidative reactions. (3) Stroma of the cornea consists of two-dimensional parallel
arranged collagen lamellae and specialised fibroblasts (keratocytes).
Background: A pre-Descemet’s layer has been described in 2013. It is a 10 µm acellular layer composed of 5-8 lamellae of predominantly type I collagen arranged in longitudinal, transverse and oblique directions.
The Dua’s layer is well described in older human (average 77 years) and plays a role in cornea pathology.
