The smooth muscles consist of spindle shaped smooth cells without signs of striations at light microscopy level. Nucleus is rod shaped and usually centred in the middle of the cell. A corkscrew-shaped nucleus indicates a contracted myocyte. Each muscle fibre is embedded in an endomysium-like connective tissue matrix (blue).
