Characteristic for the prostate gland is the fibromuscular stroma (2, 3) that embeds and surrounds the labyrinth-like glandular structure of the tubuloalveolar gland.
The epithelium comprises one (or two) layer(s) (pseudostratified), with secretory vesicles. Cytoplasmic protrusions can be pinched off from the secretory cells giving them a fuzzy appearance. The secretory products include prostate-specific-acid phosphatase, prostate-specific-antigen, amylase and fibrolysin.
