16.1.2 POJA-L7153 Macroscopy of cancellous spongy bone
Title: Macroscopy of cancellous spongy bone
Description:
Detail trabecular lattice in bone. Note cortical shell of compact bone (1) and the delicate lattice of trabeculae (2), separated by labyrinthine marrow spaces.
(1): Shaft. Right side is the lesser trochanter.
(2): Trabeculae.
Cancellous bone, also called trabecular bone or spongy bone is a light, porous bone enclosing numerous large spaces resulting in a honeycombed or spongy appearance.
The bone matrix (framework) is organised into a three-dimensional latticework of bony trabeculae, arranged along lines of stress. The open spaces are filled with bone marrow cells and blood vessels. The trabecular bone has been formed by endochondral ossification.
