Title: Autophagic vacuoles (human)
Description:
(A): Note that the regular rows of normal mitochondria are displaced. Arrows indicate replacement by accumulation of autophagic vacuoles (a case of colchicine intoxication).
(B): Detail of this colchicine myopathy demonstrates dense stained dispersed and aggregated glycogen granules and some relicts of mitochondria with cristae.
Colchicine-induced myopathy is an autophagic, vacuolar myopathy that occurs as a rare complication of treatment with colchicine. The fusion of autophagosome with lysosomes involves the sarcoplasmic microtubular system. Destabilisation and disruption of the microtubules occurs after administration of colchicine. Impaired fusion of the lysosomal vesicles leads to aggregation of autophagic vacuoles.
