Title: The portal vein-like system in the medulla of the human adrenal gland
Description:
Adrenal gland, stain Azan. Survey of the adrenal gland (A) showing the cortex comprising zona glomerulosa (1), the zona fasciculata (2) and
the zona reticularis (3). (4) Medulla with centrally the large and strong medullary veins which are provided with cushions of smooth
muscle cells as a prominence (B) and detail in (C) (arrows).
The adrenal gland is richly vascularized. The capillary networks of the cortex and the medulla are connected extensively via anastomoses. The medulla receives arterial blood via the medullary arteries but also from the venes via the cortical capillaries, thus enabling the passage from cortically produced hormones to the medulla (a portal vein-like system). The muscular cushion in the medullary veins thus can regulate the blood flow.
Keywords/Mesh: adrenal gland, medulla, muscular vein, portal vein, histology, POJA collection
