Eshuis BSc Section Electron microscopy, Department of Pathology, Radboud university medical center, Nijmegen, the Netherlands) Title: Motor endplate on skeletal muscle Description: The nerve fibre ends on a skeletal muscle fibre with the so-called motor endplates shown in (A) as dark knobs (stained with CD56 antibody) on the sarcolemma (green arrows), and in (B, arrows) in a methylene blue stained muscle tissue sample, (human). In the electron micrograph (C) in rat the light end plate (=free axon terminal) contains numerous vesicles (1) with transmitter substance (acetylcholine) that is released in the synaptic clefts or invaginations (*) of the sarcolemma of the muscle fibre (4) with dark and light bandings (iso- and anisotropic lines). (2): Swollen mitochondria in the nerve ending. (3): Nucleus of myofibre close to mitochondrial accumulation (sole plate). See also:
